Loss of PRMT-7 extends lifespan but impairs heat-stress responses in Caenorhabditis elegans.
Abstract
Protein arginine methyltransferase 7 (PRMT-7) contributes approximately 30% of total protein arginine monomethylation in Caenorhabditis elegans. Loss of prmt-7 extended lifespan without affecting brood size. However, prmt-7 mutants showed reduced heat-stress resistance, and transient heat stress did not further extend their lifespan, suggesting distinct roles for PRMT-7 in longevity and heat-stress adaptation.

Research summary
Loss of PRMT-7 extends lifespan in C. elegans while simultaneously impairing heat-stress resistance, indicating that the molecular pathways governing longevity and stress adaptation are distinct. This study contributes to the understanding of the genetic and epigenetic mechanisms underlying aging by identifying a specific methyltransferase that influences lifespan independently of general stress resilience, offering a new target for investigating the root causes of aging.
